Metallic peacock feather on neck

Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo

A metallic peacock feather design sits on the back of a person's neck, with the hair pulled to one side. The feather is outlined in fine, sparkling gold and silver lines, with a rounded eye at the top that has black and white centre detail. The design is set against warm skin and the image is shot in soft, natural light, with the feather placed slightly off centre.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The van had been parked at the lay-by since noon, its awning snapping in the hot wind, and Marisol had counted the sheets of transfers twice before the lorry pulled in. Gold and silver peacock feathers, a pound a sheet, for anyone heading east on the Sallow Flats road, where nobody had ever built a shop.

The driver, Tomas Greave, bought three sheets without looking at them. He was bound for his sister's wedding in Pell Crossing, four hundred miles on, and he asked whether the foil would survive the drive. Marisol told him it would last as long as he kept his collar up against the sun, and he laughed, a short sound that the wind took off with the dust.

Then a peacock stepped out of the scrub onto the tarmac, unbothered, dragging its train through the grit. The late sun caught every eye on it and each one flashed like the foil in her hands. Tomas stopped the lorry with the engine running. Marisol climbed down to watch, and they stood together at the verge until the bird had crossed and vanished into the brittle bushes on the far side.

That evening, back at the van, she found Tomas had left a fourth sheet on the counter with a banknote folded under it. One feather had been peeled away, and on the back, in blunt pencil, he had written that he was keeping it on the dashboard for the whole four hundred miles. She tucked the money into the till, and for the first time in a year she didn't bother to count what was left.
