Ornate mandala tattoo on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

An ornate mandala-style design with a central floral motif, paisley-like curls and a small heart at the base sits between the shoulder blades. The linework is dark and fine around pale white and pink fills, with a dotted border around the lower heart. The composition is centred on the back, with the subject's head turned away and the background softly blurred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the Grand Ballroom in Hollin Bridge wants to sit still for a design once the band gets going, so by the third waltz of the Diwali dance you have learned to work fast. Your seat is an upturned crate beside the fire door. Your tin holds cones of cream-coloured paste, a bottle of rosewater, and a sheet of paper folded into a fan so the drawings will not smudge before they dry.

The young ones ask for peacock feathers or their initials looped in gold. Your aunt Shabnam taught you the mandala when you were nine, starting from a single dot and working outwards, each ring a promise you must keep before you are allowed the next. You never draw a heart unless someone asks for one, and then you draw it small, down at the base, where it could pass for a full stop.

Tonight a woman asks you for something she cannot describe. She hums instead, the slow tune the band plays after midnight when the floor thins out, so you draw to that. Curl after curl, fine as a hair, your wrist keeping time with the bassline, until the dotted border closes round the heart and the paste darkens from green to the colour of strong tea.

When you blow on it, she laughs and says she had only wanted a feeling and you have given her a whole ballroom to carry home. Gather your tin. The lights are coming up, and a man by the door is already asking whether you can do one for his sister, and whether it will last until Sunday.
