Small elephant tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant facing left is tattooed on the ankle, with a decorative patterned blanket across its back and a curled trunk. The linework is fine and dark, with solid black areas on the blanket and body and light shading on the legs. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the tattoo sits in the lower part of the frame against a patterned fabric background.

The calf was too small for the harness my uncle had cut, so I sat on the warm stones of the river steps and stitched a new strap from my own sash while Ashvin the mahout shouted that the monsoon was coming and the merchants would not wait. I did not look up. The cloth for her blanket was indigo and madder, bought in Pataliputra by the bolt, and every stitch had to lie flat against her spine or she would fret all the way to the coast.

She was called Mirra because she had been born in the month of the red lotus, and she had a habit of curling the tip of her trunk into a tight hook whenever someone she did not know came near. Ashvin said it was a question. My grandmother said it was a charm against thieves. I thought it was simply fear, and I tried to be gentle with it, pressing a dried fig into the hook and humming the songs my mother sang over the looms.
On the last morning the boatmen came with their poles and their clicking tongues. I tied the final knot, tugged the blanket straight, and pressed my thumb to the patch of blue at her shoulder where I had worked my initials in thread so fine nobody would ever see them. Then I stepped back. Mirra lifted her trunk, found the hook of her own curl, and for a moment she looked less like a calf and more like a question someone had finally answered.
The boat pulled away. I kept the spare strap, still knotted at one end, and I wind it round my wrist whenever the river rises.
