Potted cacti and succulents on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo shows three plant pots stacked at an angle, with a spiky succulent, a round barrel cactus and sprigs of leaves spilling below them. The lines are uniform and unshaded, with no fill or grey wash. The tattoo sits on bare skin of the thigh against a chair, with a brick wall and denim shorts visible in the background.

The stack wobbled on the trestle for the third time that morning, and Maggie Pryce swore at it under her breath, the way she swore at anything that refused to sit straight. Three pots, one on another, the bottom one cracked and held together with a bent strip of copper wire. Her husband had wired it the winter before he went into hospital, and she had never once thought to take it apart.

A boy in a yellow anorak stopped at the table and asked if the spiky one was real. Maggie said everything on her table was real, which was the only promise she had ever found worth making. He wanted a cutting of the trailing leaves, the kind that poured over the rim like spilt ink. She wrapped a sprig in damp newspaper and told him to keep it out of the frost, and he nodded as if she had given him a secret.
When he had gone she stood back and looked at the stack properly. Her husband had never set the pots level. He had tilted them towards the lane, where the afternoon sun came round the chapel wall, so the rain ran off the barrel cactus and the succulent drank the light. She had spent a year trying to straighten them, and all the while they had been leaning the way he'd left them.
She lifted the top pot an inch, turned it a fraction, and set it back down at the same slant. The wire creaked. Across the market somebody shouted about parking, and the leaves tumbled over the edge towards the sun.
