The lamps along the water were the colour of weak tea tonight. A man was selling roasted chestnuts from a cart with a wheel that squealed on every turn, and he told me the feathers I had been drawing all term looked like they had come off a peacock that had been to a dance. I did not know what to say to him, so I bought a paper cone of chestnuts and ate them on the bridge while the barges went under, one after another, each carrying a light at the front like a lantern on a horse.

I went through the ink drawings again on the bus home. The one with the pale shaft and the swirling vanes, the scallops packed in like scales, the blue and pink flowers tucked into the edges. You said it was too busy. I think it is exactly as busy as a night like this one should be. Keep it. Bring the compass when you come round on Sunday and we will finish the teal wash together, and you can tell me again why yellow is the only colour that belongs at the spine.
