Microphone and film strip on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A vintage microphone is shown in shaded grey with pale blue highlights on its grille, wrapped in a black film strip with sprocket holes. The linework is bold and the shading gives the microphone a metallic, three-dimensional look. A small partial winged design sits at the bottom left of the frame, and a dark top covers the other side of the arm.

Dougie Fenn held the reel up to the window and squinted through it the way his father used to squint at a bad bet. Sprocket holes ran down the edge like a row of tiny teeth. Every frame had a voice in it, if you knew where to look.

Nobody else in Halewick remembered the Tuesday night broadcasts from the old Regal, when the projectionist would feed the sound through a single silver microphone bolted to the stage apron. Its grille was ribbed like a cathedral radiator and it caught the spill from the lamps so that it glowed pale blue at the edges. Dougie had been nine. He had been sent to fetch a cough sweet for the singer and had come back with the wrong one, and she had laughed so hard the whole hall heard it through the speakers.

He spliced the last length of film on the Wednesday, working with a razor and a jar of cold tea for the glue. When he threaded the reel into the machine and pressed play, the microphone on the screen lifted its head, and a woman's laugh came out of the little brass horn in the corner, slightly too late, the way laughter always is when it has been waiting a long time to be let out.
