Black tribal armband around the elbow
Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black tribal design with solid geometric shapes and sweeping bands wraps around the elbow and upper arm. The linework is thick and graphic, with the black ink fully saturated and no colour present. The arm is bent at the elbow against a dark background and a dark garment.

Sit down, the lot of you, because Margaret Penhaligon is about to tell the story she never told Mr Hobday. Fifty years back the Tallow Street lads and the Quarry boys were at each other every Friday, and in the end they settled it on the towpath by the canal, with no fists at all. Each boy wound a band of black tape above his elbow, twice round and tight, and the knot had to be tied by a girl from neither street, so nobody could say it had been crooked.

I was that girl. Dot Varley tied the knots, you'll remember her, hair like a haystack and a laugh you could hear across the gym. She pulled the bands so hard the boys swore their fingers went numb for a week. Tallow Street wanted a jagged star for the bend of the arm, the way the fishwives sketched their washing-line patterns in chalk, and the Quarry boys wanted long stripes sweeping up toward the shoulder, to show they were running for the same bus home.
Neither side ever took their tape off. It went grey, then it went soft, and by the time the Quarry mill closed the boys had grown into men with wives and bad knees who still rolled up their sleeves to show it. Dot died in the spring. Last week I went down to the towpath to see if the knot was still there, and it was, slipped down under the rail where the water meets the stones.
So when you lift your glasses tonight, lift them to the knot. Whoever tied it was never going to let it come undone.
