Microphone and roses banner on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A vintage microphone sits at the top of the design, with two roses below and a ribbon banner across the middle reading The best is yet to come. The microphone grille and rose petals are rendered with fine shading and detailed texture, while the banner lettering is bold and clearly outlined. The image is in black and grey, photographed close up on a forearm in a tattoo studio with a paper towel and tattooing chair visible in the background.

Nobody clapped. A little girl in a yellow hat asked whether the roses on the poster were real, and I said they were the sort that only bloom in November. I made that up. She believed me, which is more than the bank has managed this year.

We load the wagons for Dartford on Monday. Pettifer wants the canvas banner with the gold lettering left behind in the field, but I've rolled it up and pushed it into the microphone case with the cable. I'm not sure any more whether I'm lying to the crowd or to myself, and I've stopped asking the mic.

If you come to Dartford, sit near the front where the sawdust is thickest. I'll sing you the song you hated when you were nine, the one about the lighthouse, and I'll get the words wrong on purpose so you can shout them back at me. Love, Dad.
