Microphone, guitar and clef on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vintage microphone with detailed chrome-like shading sits above an electric guitar neck and body, with a large bass clef and several music notes behind them. The shading is smooth and realistic on the instruments, while the background uses loose black ink splatters and dashes that fade into the skin. The tattoo fills most of the forearm against a plain white door and blue top.

The bass clef was already hanging over the bar when you walked in, a black curl of ink painted on the wall above the bottles, because Dessa Okafor had never once in her life let a sign go unpainted. You wanted a stool, a whisky, and nobody asking about the last record. She gave you the stool and the whisky and nothing else.

The mic was the old Shure her father had carried up the Jamaica Road in a pillowcase in 1971, the one with the chrome grille gone soft at the edges from thirty years of other people's breath. She had it on a stand in the corner of the back room now, and the guitar leaned against it like a drunk who had stopped trying to stand. Splashes of black ink ran down the wall behind them, the way rain runs down a window when the streetlights are the only thing you can see.
At half two the lights went out in the bar and the back room hummed. Dessa struck one chord, flat and dirty, and the notes came off the wall like they had been waiting for permission. You understood then that the song was never going to be the one you had come to hear. It was the one you had written on the back of a bar mat in March and given to her to keep safe.
She played it twice. The second time, the mic picked up your voice before you knew you had opened your mouth.
