Vintage microphone with music staff
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A vintage ribbed microphone sits at the centre of the design, with its head shaded in greys to show metal highlights and depth. Curving lines of a musical staff loop around it, carrying black quaver and crotchet notes and a treble clef on the left. The photo is taken straight on with warm lighting, and the shading is smooth against the skin.

Nobody at Hallam Street Studios called it anything but the Old Lady, and nobody touched her without clean hands. She was a ribbed microphone from before the war, her head furred with grey mesh, and she had been the voice of the Northern Light Hour for eleven years. On the Tuesday in September when Frank Carrick came in to record his last song, Margaret Doyle was the only engineer left who knew how to set her levels.

Frank had sung the same ballad on air every Sunday since 1951, but this time the lyric sheet shook in his hand. He stood where he always stood, a pace back from the grille, and waited for the red light. Margaret watched him draw breath and then watched him lose the first line entirely. The room went quiet except for the low hum of the valves. Instead of words, he began to hum, wandering up and down the tune the way a finger follows a stave across a page.
Margaret did not stop the tape. She rode the faders, let the hum swell and fall, and when Frank reached the place where the chorus should have been he simply stopped and laughed, a short bark the Old Lady caught perfectly. "Leave that in," he said through the glass. "Nobody needs the words. They know the tune."
The record went out that Sunday with the laugh still on it. Afterwards Margaret kept the reel on a shelf in her flat, and sometimes, late, she played only the last ninety seconds with the lights off, listening to a man find his way back to a song by humming it, like someone walking home in the dark along a familiar line of notes.
