The hauler Tansy Wren had been patched so often that her hull sang a different note in every wind, and the crew said you could hear her coming before you saw her. She flew with her two forward wings tipped like a closed fist, and her hold smelt of rye and machine oil. The grey moon the old charts called the Hollow had been swallowing convoys for nine seasons, and nobody with sense went within a day's burn of it.

Captain Ysolde Marr did not have much sense, or she had more than most. She took the Wren down into the Hollow's great crater, where the ground was pitted and dark like a hammered pan, and she cut the engines until only the air pumps breathed. Her navigator, a boy named Pip who had never seen the sea, sat cross-legged with the chart on his knees. "It's looking at the crater," he said. "It always looks at the crater."
They waited three days on ration bread while the station turned its one round eye toward the far rim and fired at nothing they could see. Each flash lit the crater walls like the inside of a bell. On the fourth night the eye went dark for the length of a long breath, and Ysolde opened the hatch and the Wren slid out of the shadow with every sack of seed grain she had ever stolen rattling in her belly.
They sold the grain at Lantern Dock and paid off the patches. Pip kept a scrap of the Hollow's dust in a tin, and when the children on the dock asked where the Wren got her song, he would draw a ring with his thumb on the table and say, that is where we hid.
