Mind and matter script on the lower abdomen
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo on a bare lower abdomen, with the word mind written above a horizontal line and matter written below it. The lettering is thin, hand-drawn black linework with slightly uneven strokes. The ink is all black on warm, light skin, and the tattoo sits in the lower centre of the frame, just above the waistband of dark clothing.

The envelope had no postmark and no business being under my door at twenty to three, when the lost property counter on Carrick Row had been shut for four hours. Inside was a single sheet folded in thirds, and on it, in soft pencil, someone had drawn a short line with two words stacked above and below it: mind over matter. Beneath the line there was a blank space, left the way you leave a chair at a table for someone who might not come.

Mr Abernethy ran that counter for thirty-one years before his knees gave out, and he used to say everything lost in the city could be weighed if you were patient enough. A glove, a brass key, a child's left shoe. He'd hold each one a moment and tell you how much of it was still in its owner's pocket. I'd laughed at him. I sat under the strip light now with the ledger open and tried his method on the sheet. A key over the number of doors it opened. A glove over the hand that didn't come back for it. Every sum came out to something I couldn't hold.
At six the first bus groaned past the window and the sky went the colour of weak tea. I took the pencil and, without deciding to, wrote a number in the blank space below the line, a number I hadn't known I was carrying: the hours I'd spent waiting for the bell to ring. Then I drew the line thicker, the way you'd rule off a column you were finished with. The bell above the door rang for the first customer, a man with a wet umbrella asking if anyone had found his cat.
