City skyline outline on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a continuous single-line outline of a city skyline, including a tall spired tower, a large Ferris wheel, a palm tree and a small heart at the right end. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. It sits horizontally along the side of the ribs on a light-toned skin area, with a white crop top above it.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the nets. No, I'll not start with the sea, the sea never did anyone a favour by being talked about first. I'll start with Mira Costa, who ran a ferry kiosk at the end of the Brackwater pier and could not draw a straight line with a ruler, which is why her drawings were the best in the town.

Her brother Tomas took the Gull out the week the wind swung round to the north-east, and by the Thursday the harbour master had stopped pretending. Mira went down to the chandlers and bought a roll of paper and a pencil worn to a nub. She did not draw the boat. She drew Brackwater as the boy would see it coming in from the grey: the spire of St Ailith's, the big wheel turning over the bay, the palm the council planted outside the Sailors' Rest that nobody had ever managed to kill, and at the far right, low down where the lamps first touched the water, a little heart.
She drew it in one line. She told the chandler a broken line was a broken promise, and she was not having her city cut into pieces. Her pencil never once lifted from the paper, so she had to walk the whole skyline with her hand, slow, the way you'd follow a rope in the dark.
Tomas came in on the Saturday with the tide at the turn. The harbour lamps were still lit and the wheel was turning, and he steered by the shape of it against the sky. Mira said afterwards that the heart was only there so he'd know someone had been waiting at the end of the pier, and that was all a map ever needed to say.
