Close-up of fine line black script reading mind above a horizontal line and matter below, tattooed on the side of a stomach above the waistband.

Mind over matter lettering on the side of the stomach

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a bare midriff with a navel and a black waistband, with a small tattoo on the side of the abdomen. The words mind and matter are written in thin, slightly handwritten black linework, stacked either side of a short straight rule so they read like a fraction. The ink is black and sits on pale skin under soft, even lighting, with the rest of the frame showing a light garment at the top edge.

Dear Tom, the boat is still in the shed where you left her, and the tide has been kind to the slipway this week, so you needn't fret about her. Mr Ostler down the quay asked after you on Tuesday. He wanted to know if the Morwenna would be back in the water before the regatta, and I told him you had never once in your life been early with anything, so he should not hold his breath.

Your grandfather kept a slate by the stove for sums he could not do in his head. Long division, mostly, and the odd fraction when the tide tables confused him. The line he drew between two numbers always looked to me like the horizon, something you could stand on without falling off. He used to say the top number was what you had and the bottom was what you were up against, and that a fraction was only honest if you never forgot which was which.

I found the slate when I cleared the dresser. He had written mind over matter on it once, in his careful capitals, and then rubbed half of it out, as though he had changed his mind about the ratio. I have kept it on the windowsill where the light comes in off the water. Come home when you can and we will work out the sum together, the way he would have wanted, with the kettle on and the door open to the boats.

Love, Nan.
