Minimalist owl perched on a branch
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised owl with a rounded head outline, two dot eyes and a curved beak line, perched on a single horizontal branch stroke. It is drawn in thin, continuous black linework with no shading, and the open skin around it gives the design plenty of space. The photo is taken straight on with the design centred in the frame.

Dear Lysandros, the die for the new silver came back from the foundry with the owl's head cracked clean through, and the magistrate's clerk says the coins must go out before the Panathenaia or the grain merchants will refuse them. I have cut the owl again, this time with one line where I used to have forty. You told me once that a bird is only the shape a hand remembers. I have tried to remember it.

The owl sits on a single bough of olive, which is all the metal will allow. I drew the head as an egg standing on its narrow end, two round eyes set high like a pair of small coins, and the beak as one curve that turns back on itself. The men at the mint laughed and asked where the feathers had gone. I told them Athena does not need feathers to be seen in the dark. Mostly I wanted the bird to look as though it was listening.
Yesterday the potter's boy brought me a shard from the harbour, scratched with a line that someone had carved in a hurry: a single owl drawn in one stroke, with no bough beneath it. Nobody knows who made it. I held the shard against the new die and the two shapes fit together like a lid on a jar. So the bough stays. A bird should have somewhere to stand, even on silver.
Come home before the sailing season. Bring the good wax, and tell your mother the owl is smaller than she feared. I will keep one struck coin for you, still warm from the press, and you can decide whether it looks like anything at all.
