Fine line outline of a seated cat

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A thin, single black outline of a seated cat faces left, with pointed ears, a curled tail and a simple body contour. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or grey wash inside the outline. The cat sits off-centre on warm, reddish skin that fills the frame, and the photo is slightly soft.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink ran out on the third day of the Thaw, which is why the Charter of Hallow Reach has a cat in the margin where the king's seal should be. I was the court's line-clerk then, a job that meant drawing the borders of things nobody had bothered to measure. Old Maud, who kept the mill rights, swore the cat was a bad omen. She said anything that sat so neatly on a document would one day get up and walk off with the grain.

Nobody believed me when I said the cat had come in through the scriptorium window that morning. It was grey where it wasn't dusty, with ears like two folded letters and a tail that curled round its feet as if it had been asked a question and was thinking it over. I did not touch it. I only dipped my pen, found the bottle dry, and drew the outline with the last thread of ink left in the nib, one unbroken stroke from the top of its head down the back and round the tail.

The king read the charter that evening and asked why there was a picture of a cat where the boundary of the millpond should be. I told him the millpond had been drawn wrong for forty years and the cat had sat on the mistake until I noticed. He laughed, which he rarely did, and signed. In the morning the cat was gone, and the millpond had moved a hand's width east, where the water had always wanted to go.

I still keep a copy of that charter in the drawer under my desk. Some mornings I unroll it and see that the cat has not moved at all, only sits there with its back to the page, looking out at the reach as if the land belonged to it.
