Line owl with swirls on the side of the torso

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black line drawing of an owl sits in profile on skin, with a large round eye, feather marks and curling swirls around its head and tail. The linework is single weight and unshaded, with no added colour. The owl is centred in the frame against a slightly reddened background of skin, with a small mushroom shape near the bottom right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mushrooms came up overnight along the south wall, a neat ring of them pale as candle wax, and by the time you had your boots laced the owl was already perched on the gate post, watching you with the wide, unblinking stare it keeps for people who have not yet earned their breakfast.

Mrs Pell had warned you on your first morning. The owl was called Hollis, the garden had belonged to him long before it belonged to the vicarage, and nothing that grew between the box hedges was to be picked without his say-so. You had taken it for the sort of joke old women tell new girls. You had not expected him to follow you down the path, his feathers ruffling and smoothing like the curls of ironwork on the summerhouse gate, nor to drop onto the ring of mushrooms and settle there with his tail wrapped round the stems as if daring you to try.

You counted them at noon: eight. You counted again at four, when the light had gone long and yellow across the lawn, and there were seven. Hollis had not moved. He only blinked, slowly, the way a man does when he has been caught reading someone else's post. On the potting bench behind you, under a flowerpot, you found a scrap of paper in Mrs Pell's looping hand. Some are for him. Leave him the one nearest the wall.

You pulled a saucer of milk from the back step and set it beside the wall. By morning the mushroom was gone, and the owl was asleep on the gate with his eyes shut, which you chose to take as thanks.
