Watercolour owl on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A perched owl with wide blue eyes sits at the centre of the design, framed by thin black branches with leaves and fine splattered lines. The owl is drawn in dark sketchy linework and filled with soft purple, blue and pink washes that bleed beyond the outlines. The tattoo fills the upper back, with the skin tone and a patterned dark background visible around it.

The island of Carrow had one wise thing in it, and everyone agreed it was the owl that lived in the ash tree above the harbour wall. Its eyes were the blue of the sea before a storm, and when it looked at you, you felt you had been weighed and found to be carrying the right amount of sorrow.

Marta Ennis came to the wall one night in November with a sack of wet herring and a question she had been carrying since spring. Her brother had gone out with the crab boats and not come back. The harbourmaster had said the sea keeps what it likes. Marta did not believe that. She believed the sea was only a sea, and that something on land had to know the way home.
The owl turned its head all the way round, the way owls do, and then looked at her again. It did not speak. Instead it dropped a single grey feather onto the wall, and where the feather touched the stone the lichen turned violet and gave off a faint blue smoke that smelled of rain on bracken. Marta followed the smoke along the cliff path until it thinned into the mist over the water, and there, on a black rock, sat a boat with its lamp lit and a figure at the oars who lifted a hand.
She went home that night with her brother's coat and no answers. The owl stayed in the ash tree. Some say the feather is still on the wall, though nobody on Carrow has ever been able to pick it up.
