Minnie Mouse bow key on the calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large ornate key tattoo runs down the lower leg, with its bow shaped like Minnie Mouse's head and red polka-dot bow above a black Mickey-style silhouette at the top of the shaft. The scrollwork and the key shaft are shaded in black and grey with smooth gradients, while the bow is filled with solid red and white dots. The design sits centrally on a plain skin background against white fabric.

The key turned up in the bottom drawer of Idris Pryce's bench the week the Welfare sold its piano, and nobody in Glynhafod could say which lock it had been cut for. It was heavier than a house key, brass gone dull at the bit, with a round-eared bow of red cloth stitched with white dots. Mrs Pryce said it had come from the old pit baths, where the lamp cabinets still stood with their numbered doors. I was fourteen and sweeping his shop on Saturdays for threepence and a cake, and I thought it looked like something a child would hide in a sock.

We tried it on every door in the valley that Idris had ever fitted. The chapel vestry. The shop safe. A cupboard in the library that smelled of wet coal. Nothing. On the last Saturday in October, with rain coming sideways off the tip, he took it down to the baths himself, and I followed with the torch because he had the bad hip and would not admit it on the hill.
Cabinet number nine was rusted shut except for the lock. The key went in as if it had been waiting. Inside were a pair of boots gone white with salt, a tin of barley sugar, and an envelope addressed in pencil to Ffion, from a man who said he would be back up the shaft by Christmas. Idris read it twice, folded it into his coat, and said nothing for the whole walk home.
He gave me the key at the door. 'Keep it,' he said. 'It opens the one thing I never could.' I still wear it on a string under my collar, and when the light catches the red bow I think of that letter and of the boots still standing in the cabinet, waiting for a man who never came up.
