Minnie Mouse key and castle on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A key forms the subject, with its bow shaped as Minnie Mouse ears topped by a red bow with white polka dots. A dark castle silhouette sits beside the lower shaft, and the key's bit ends in a small red tip. The key is outlined and shaded in greys and browns, with the bow as the main area of colour against pale skin.

Dear Ma,

The key is finished at last, though the bow took me three nights and two ruined blanks to get right. Master Aldous said a key should look like what it opens, and I told him the castle on Carrick Rise has no door worth the trouble, only a gate that rusts shut every winter. So I made the bow first, round-eared like the mice that run the granary at the palace, and tied it with red silk over the bit like a girl going to market. He laughed till he coughed.
The king's steward came up the hill on Tuesday to collect the old keys. He turned this one over in his palm and asked what it opened. I said the nursery, which was a lie, since the nursery was boarded up years ago, and he looked at me as if I had told him the moon was a cheese. Then he asked about the tip. I had filed it to a small red point, the same red as the bow, so you'd know which end to hold.
Here is the strange part. Yesterday the gate at the top of the hill swung open by itself in the wind, and the dark shape on the lower shaft matched the outline of the towers behind it, as though the key had been cut from the castle and not the other way round. Nobody has gone up to check. I think they're frightened of it.
I'll keep the spare for you. Write soon, and tell Father the goats are not to be trusted near the bellows.
Your loving son, Tobias
