Ornate key tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornate key is tattooed on the forearm, with a decorative scrolled bow, filigree detailing and a stepped bit at the end of the shaft. The shading is smooth and tonal, giving the key a three-dimensional, metallic look. The key runs diagonally along the arm against a blurred outdoor background, with a blue sleeve at the top left and braided bracelets at the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate in the wall had been locked since your grandmother's funeral, and nobody in the village could say where the key had gone. You tried the bolt with a bent hairpin, then a spoon handle, then your father's pocketknife, which snapped at the tip and left you swearing under the ivy.

Mrs Abernethy from the cottage at the end of the lane watched from her doorstep. 'Ask the mason,' she said. 'He built that wall for the Cordells, and the Cordells kept their keys in the bread bin.' You found the bin on the third shelf of the pantry, under a tin of Bovril and a rolled-up seed catalogue from 1962. Taped to the bottom of the tin was a key as long as your hand, its bow scrolled like frost on a window.

It turned without a fight. Beyond the gate the garden had gone wild: foxgloves taller than your shoulder, a bench furred with moss, and at the centre a sundial whose gnomon had snapped off. Roses had climbed the north wall until they reached the roof of the glasshouse, and somewhere under the nettles a pear tree was dropping fruit that nobody had picked for years.

You stood on the path with the key warm in your fist and understood what the old woman had meant. The Cordells had never wanted the garden locked. They had wanted someone to come through with something of their own to plant. You went back to the pantry for the seed catalogue, and by dusk you had sown a row of sweet peas along the wall, the first thing to grow there in sixty years.
