Ornate key on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A large key runs down the calf, with a wide ornamental bow at the top decorated with curling scrolls and two stylised faces. The key shaft and bit are filled in solid black with clean edges, while the scrollwork is outlined in black with grey-toned shading. The tattoo is centred on the leg against a plain skin background with a blurred backdrop.

The clerk at Harrowgate Junction has run the left luggage hatch for eleven years, long enough to know that a key with faces on it is never one anyone wants back. This one comes under the grille on a wet Tuesday in March, pushed by a man in an overcoat who does not wait for a ticket. Two faces look up from the bow of the iron, one laughing and one pinched, their curled hair fused into the same scrollwork as the wings either side of them.

Locker thirty-one, the tag says. You climb the step ladder past the crates of tinned peaches and an umbrella stand nobody has claimed since the coronation, and the key turns over easily, as if it has been waiting. Inside is a single leather case, strapped twice and heavier than it looks. Tucked under the strap is a card in a hand you half recognise: Keep this until the eight-fifteen. Two of us will come. Only one of us will be sorry.
The eight-fifteen leaves without them. You watch the platform through the grille as the steam thins over the empty rails, and you are nearly ready to drop the shutter when a woman in a green mackintosh stops at the counter, out of breath, and asks for thirty-one. You know her before she speaks, because the face on the left of the bow has her mouth, the same tight wish to be elsewhere. She holds out her hand. Her fingers are cold, and there is a pale band on one of them where a ring used to sit.
You give her the key. She turns the bow towards the light so the two faces meet, and tells you the other one will not be coming, and that the case was never heavy with anything but the clothes they both swore they would leave behind. She lifts it onto the counter and asks you to stamp her ticket for the next train north. You stamp it, the ink comes up clean, and for once the hatch has given back exactly what was left in it.
