Mischief Managed lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is two lines of black script lettering, reading Mischief Managed, angled diagonally across the inner wrist. The linework is smooth and fairly even, with thin strokes and little shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The close-up photograph is taken at an angle, with dark fabric at the top left and a blurred background.

The hire van had a cracked windscreen and a radio that only found one station, a preacher from Barstow who wanted everyone to repent before the petrol ran out. Marnie turned him down to a mumble and kept her eyes on the white line, because the road ran dead straight for thirty miles and the heat made the far end look like water.

Aunt Ruth had said it first. We were eleven and nine and came up her lane soaked to the knees from the mill pond, having floated her prize marrows down it on a tin bath. She stood on the step with a tea towel over one shoulder, looked us up and down, and said, "Mischief managed," before going back in to put the kettle on. We never knew whether she was pleased or livid. We said it ever after, always in her voice.
The letter in the glovebox was the reason for the trip. Ruth had left her bakery to nobody in particular and to us in a few lines nobody could make out properly, so we had driven two days to find out what she meant. Half a mile before the junction, Marnie braked hard. Someone had turned the sign round. It now said Ruth's Bakery, Ten Miles, and the arrow pointed back the way we had come.
Marnie laughed until she had to wipe her eyes on her sleeve. I took the marker from the dashboard and, beneath the arrow, wrote in my best copperplate: Mischief managed. Then we turned the van around and followed the arrow home, where the ovens were still warm and the kettle was already on.
