Molecular structures across both shoulders

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of the upper torso shows thin black linework forming chemical molecule diagrams, with hexagonal rings, bonds and small dotted or filled nodes. One structure runs over the left shoulder and a second, smaller one sits over the right shoulder and upper chest, mirrored either side of the collarbone. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a plain cream wall, with even, soft lighting.

Dear Owen,

You will not remember this, but in your third year you asked me why carbon likes to close into rings instead of running on in straight lines, and I told you six was a comfortable number for things that needed to hold each other up. You laughed at me. I have thought about that answer a good deal since your wedding, which I am still recovering from, mostly the dancing.

The speech was the difficulty. Your best man had asked me to say something short about you as a boy, and I stood up with a card full of anecdotes and found I could only speak in drawings. So I took a biro from the top table and sketched on the back of the seating plan, one ring joined to the next, the way I used to on the blackboard before the fire alarm went. Forty chairs turned round to see what an old woman was doing with a napkin.

Drawing a bond is easy. Keeping one takes every atom holding a hand and no loose ends left dangling. I said so, then sat down before anyone could ask me to explain the dotted lines.

Afterwards Jess found the napkin in my handbag and asked if she could keep it. I said yes. It is the only thing from that day I would want framed, though I suspect she will frame the wrong one.
