Constellation tattoo across upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a person's upper back showing a constellation tattoo made of small solid black stars joined by thin straight lines. The stars vary in size and are spread across both shoulder blades, with a larger cluster near the centre. The ink is solid black on warm skin, and the plain background keeps the focus on the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire is eating my voice, and you will want to hear this one properly, because it is about thread. In the salt town of Kesh there lived a weaver called Hanun, and every evening after the water carriers had gone home she worked a night cloak on her upright loom. She pricked the dark wool with a bone awl, one small hole for each star, and then drew a single black thread from star to star, pulling it tight so the lines ran straight as a plumb cord. Her daughter Mirri sat under the loom and counted the knots, because counting was the only thing she was allowed to help with.

The magistrate heard of the cloak and wanted it for his wedding. He came to the loom with his clerks and said the cloak must be finished by the new moon, and that every thread joining the stars must be cut, so that the sky would be a field of separate lights that could be counted and taxed. Hanun said a sky with no lines was a sky with no paths, and she would not cut them. He had her put in the granary, and the cloak stayed on the loom with its threads untouched.

Mirri climbed onto the granary roof that night and looked up, and the lines were there in the sky, pale and real, the same as the ones in the wool. She followed one with her finger from its first star to its last, and when the water carriers came back in the dark she called them up and showed them the paths. They walked home by the lines that season, and the magistrate never found a clerk who could cut what was already in the sky. So look up tonight, and trace one with your finger, and follow it to the star where it ends. That star is wherever you are standing.
