Dotted star constellation on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with short dark hair is seen from behind, showing a thin line of small dots and star-like marks running diagonally across the upper back. The linework is very fine and stippled, with a few isolated dots scattered nearby on the skin. The photograph is black and white, with soft lighting and a shallow focus that keeps the tattoo sharp against the plain background.

Tomas counted the stars from the top of the spoil heap because it was the only place in Ferndale where the pit lamps did not reach. Below him the winding wheel groaned, stopped, and the night shift went down in their cages with their tin bottles knocking against their knees. He had climbed up with a flask of cold tea and a stub of carpenter's pencil, meaning to draw the sky for his sister Nell, who had not been out after dark since the strike began.

The sky over the valley was clearer than he had ever seen it. He found the three stars in a row that his grandfather had shown him, then the bent line that ran off from them like a crook. Nell used to lie on the back step with him and name them wrong on purpose, calling the Plough a teapot and the cluster a handful of spilt sugar. He marked each one with a dot, pressing until the paper dimpled, and when he had finished he saw the line bent and dipped exactly the way the seam dipped under the Coedcae road, never where you expected it to go.
Nell came out at half past eleven with a shawl over her head and a candle in a jam jar. She did not ask what he was doing. She took the paper, held it up against the flame, and traced the dots with one finger, counting under her breath the way she used to count the tram wheels when she was small.
"That one's out of place," she said, and tapped a point near the bottom. "It's further over than that. Dad always said you could find your way home by the ones that don't move." Tomas took back the pencil and made the dot where she pointed. Far below, the cage bell rang for the men coming up.
