Monarch butterfly on a red flower
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A monarch butterfly with orange wings, black veins and white spots rests on a large red flower with layered petals. Yellow stamens and green leaves sit beneath the petals, and the shading gives the petals and wings a soft, three-dimensional look. Vivid reds, oranges, greens and yellows dominate the composition against the lighter skin tone.

The thirty-second had not been there yesterday. It stood a little apart by the water butt, a single bloom so dark it looked wet, and on its widest petal sat a butterfly she had never seen in Kent before.

She knew the name from her brother's letters. Monarch, he had written from Canada, the ones that come down the coast in their thousands and hang from the pines like late leaves. This one folded and unfolded its wings slowly, orange for a long moment and then black-veined, as if it were deciding whether the flower was worth the trouble.
Her husband had bred the dahlia the summer before he died, crossing a Mexican seedling with a stubborn Dutch red, and he had never given it a name. He said names made people careless with things. She had meant to write to the seed merchant in Canterbury and ask whether he remembered the cross, and had not.
She went to fetch the trowel, and when she came back the butterfly had gone. The bloom had opened another petal, and in its heart sat a seed no bigger than a grain of pepper, and caught among the yellow stamens was a single orange scale, fine as pollen, which she did not brush away.
