The sack was heavier than Vennick had promised, and he had promised it would ruin me. Halfway up the Sorrow Pass, with sleet slanting off the scree, I stopped to retie the neck of it because my cord had frayed in the night. Inside were eleven hundred silver crowns I had counted twice in the lamplit back room of his shop, because I did not trust a man who counted first and told me the total afterwards.

He had marked the sack himself, a bold S with two strokes through it, the way a child draws a bag of gold in the margin of a sum. "Nobody at a border post reads a sack that looks like a sack," he had said, grinning, his teeth yellow in the candlelight. "Give them something they recognise." So the customs men at Dorrin would see the mark and know exactly what they were not allowed to touch, and I would see it and know exactly what I was carrying.
At the cairn an old shepherd sat on a stone out of the wind, a dog asleep across his boots. He studied the sack for a long while. "Bread?" he asked. "Bread," I said. "Heavy bread," he said, and I did not argue. He offered me a heel of his own loaf, which was real bread, and we ate in silence while the sleet thinned.
When I stood to go, I worked one crown loose from the lining and set it on the cairn between the dog's paws. "For the bread." He did not pick it up. He only nodded at the pass, where the cloud was lifting, and said the mountain would keep an honest count. Vennick could have his eleven hundred, and the mountain could keep its one.
