Tiny arrow tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A clenched fist fills the frame, with a small upright arrow tattoo in black ink on the middle finger. The thin, simple linework has no shading and the arrow is a single solid outline with a shaft and head. The background is softly blurred in warm red and pink tones, with a dark wristband visible at the top of the wrist.

You are sixteen the summer the narrowboat Patience sticks in the lock at Haddon Bottom, and the bargeman's wife hands you the windlass without a word. The water is brown and fast after three days of rain, and it slides through the gates with a sound like someone pouring gravel. Your job is to stand on the cill and keep the paddles turning while Ada shouts from the back deck about the ropes.

Mostly you watch the little painted arrow on the lock beam, the one the canal trust put up years ago, pointing up towards the towpath where the water comes from. Nobody local bothers with it. Ada says it is for boats coming down from the north, so they know which way the water is meant to flow, and that most people get it backwards anyway.

When the gates finally groan open you see a heron standing in the shallows below, perfectly still, facing the current as if it has been told to wait. You stop cranking. Ada asks what you are doing. You say you are waiting too, and she laughs so hard she nearly drops the mooring line into the cut.

That evening you tie the windlass on a string round your neck and tell her you are leaving at the next town. She does not argue. She only points at the arrow on the beam and says what every boatman says, that the trick is to trust the direction and let the water do the work. You pretend you do not know it already, and you climb ashore with the sun behind you, going the way you have chosen.
