Sit down, the lot of you, and keep your hands out of the biscuit tin. The lamp's lit and the wind's behind us, so I'll tell you about Abel Venn, who cooked aboard the Marguerite Lowe for eleven years and never once lost a pot overboard.

He had the words done in Valparaíso, on the forearm, by a man who worked out of a room above a chandler's with one electric bulb and a jar of Indian ink. Big old letters, the kind the Welsh miners favoured, with curls trailing beneath them like the wake of a dinghy. Only God Can Judge Me, it said. The captain, Harrowgate, read it every morning over his porridge and went red at the collar.

Harrowgate had a book of rules and a rule for everything. When the galley stove cracked in the Roaring Forties, he docked Abel a month's pay and called him a heathen. Abel said nothing and went on stirring. Then a green sea came over the bow one night and tore the stove clean off its bolts, and the ship went wallowing toward the Horn with nothing hot to eat.

Harrowgate came down to the galley himself, soaked to the skin, and asked how a man could feed a crew on salt beef and hope. Abel rolled up his sleeve, held the words under the lamp, and said, Ask Him, sir. He's the only one who gets a vote. The captain laughed until he choked. They ate cold biscuit that night, and the next morning Harrowgate ordered the stove rebuilt from the spare boiler plate. He never docked a man's pay for ink again.
