Moon, stars and pine trees on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon crescent-shaped moon with a smiling face sits in a purple night sky with clouds, yellow four-pointed stars and a yellow shooting star. Below, a dark silhouette of pine trees against teal and blue shading forms a round panel. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills define the design, which wraps around the upper arm and shoulder.

The Land Rover gave up its ghost on the last hairpin below Bealach Dubh, just as the moon cleared the ridge. You had told Nell the car would manage. Tomas Gall had warned you about this pass. He lived in a stone cottage at the foot of it and kept a lamp in his window that he swore the moon lit for him. "She smiles when the road is clear," he said, handing you a flask of tea that tasted of peat. "Frown and you turn back." Then a star cut a bright line over the pines, Nell gasped and made a wish out loud, and you were fairly sure that broke the rule.
You pull the bonnet up and find the fan belt hanging in two pieces. Nell pulls her scarf off and you knot the wool around the broken ends, and the engine turns over, grudging but alive. Below, the forest sits in a bowl of blue shadow, the trees dark as cut card, and the cold comes up off the water like a held breath.
When you look up again the moon has tipped its face toward the road. It looks, unmistakably, pleased with you.
