Mountain landscape in a circle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows a mountain range under a night sky with a bright moon and scattered stars, above a line of pine trees and a winding river. The shading is built from fine stippled dots that give the peaks and sky their texture, with lighter areas left as bare skin. The design is in black and grey and sits centred on the forearm against a softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The best man lost the rings somewhere between the church gate and the minibus, so at half past four I was sent up the fell path with a torch and a list of instructions from Dad. Mum wanted photographs on the old packhorse bridge at Clough Foot before the light went, and Dad wanted the rings found before anybody noticed they were missing. "You know the river," he said, pressing the list into my hand. "Follow it up through the pines and you can't miss the tin."

The pines closed over the path within a hundred yards. The river ran loud and brown beside me, talking over its stones, and the trunks stood so close that the noise from the marquee dropped away entirely. Halfway up I found the tin wedged in a dry-stone wall, exactly where Dad had said it would be, with a note inside in his square capitals: NOT A JOKE THIS TIME. The rings sat on a folded handkerchief that smelled of Gran's lavender.

Coming back down, I stopped on the bridge to catch my breath. Above the ridge the sky had turned from bruise to ink, and the first stars were pricking through as if someone had flicked a brush over dark card. The moon had come up behind the peaks, round and small and very bright. Gran had walked these hills every Sunday until she was eighty-one, and she used to say the moon here always looked as if it had been hung by hand for somebody particular.

Gareth was waiting at the gate with his tie undone. I held out the tin, and he opened it, saw the handkerchief, and laughed so hard he had to sit on the wall. "Lavender," he said. "Your gran's still looking after us." He tipped the rings into his palm and held them up against the sky, where the moon sat in the gold like a coin dropped in a well.
