Crescent moon and waves in a black circle
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black circle contains a crescent moon, small white dots representing stars, and two stippled waves with striped shading beneath them. The linework is bold at the circle's edge, while the waves use dense dotwork and fine parallel lines for texture. The design is entirely black and grey and sits centred on the forearm against a plain, out-of-focus background.

Joe, the moon's gone to a thin paring again, the kind your grandad used to say was the sea's fingernail, and I've been out on the back step every night counting it over the wall. You'll think me soft, but the wind's been off the water since Sunday and I can't sleep for it.

The pit lost its fan on Thursday and the whole row was out on the pavement by six, women in pinnies and men with black still in the creases of their necks. Mrs Hebden's lad came up from the shaft grey as ash and didn't say a word to anyone. The sea doesn't care about any of that. It just keeps climbing the breakwater in those white-fleeced heaps, drawing back and coming on again, the same as it did when your granddad was a boy and the coal went out on ships from the staithes.
I went down to the harbour this morning with the tin box you left under my bed. There's a page in it you drew at twelve, a black circle with the moon cut into it and waves rolling along the bottom like they were being pulled by a string. I never knew what you meant by it. Standing on the harbour wall I thought I did: a sky you could sit inside while the sea got on with its business below. Come home when the fan's mended. I'll leave the back light on and put a salt cross on the glass for every star I can't see from here.
