Moon, foliage and crystal on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed full moon with cratered surface sits at the centre of the design, framed by a curving sprig of leaves and fern-like foliage. Above it, faint dotted lines form nested triangles, and below the foliage a solid black triangle holds a small crystal drawn in fine linework. The ink is black and grey, with stippled shading on the moon and clean outlines throughout, photographed against long grass on a thigh.

The moon had been hanging the wrong way round for three nights, and Ivy Marr was tired of climbing the ladder to fix it. Her grandfather had painted it on the side of the ghost train in 1961, a full moon with its seas stippled in dark grey, and every spring someone new decided the craters looked like a face and wanted them turned to the road. Ivy wanted them left alone. She sat on the top rung with a tin of size and a brush the width of a matchstick, while the common below filled with the smell of frying onions and wet canvas.

Dorrie from the candyfloss stall came up with two teas in tin mugs and stood at the foot of the ladder. 'Mr Hollis says the moon should face the car park,' she said. 'Lots of the lads come from there.' Ivy looked down at the sprig of rosemary curling round the bottom of the picture, the bracken tied with red thread, and the small black triangle where the crystal sat like a drop of frozen rain. 'It faces where we're going next,' she said. 'Everything else on this site is pointing at where we've been.'
Dorrie laughed and drank her tea. That night, after the last ride had shut and the generator had coughed itself quiet, Ivy finished the crater nearest the rim and blew the dust off the paint. The lamps along the midway went out one by one. In the dark, the crystal caught the light from the bowser, and the moon turned its open face west, towards the lane where the vans would be lined up at dawn.
