Crescent moon with face on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with a stylised face in profile sits on the lower leg, with a small cluster of clouds, a four-pointed star and a sparkle beside it. The bold outlines are filled with black ink, and dotwork stippling shades the curve of the moon and the clouds. The image is in black and grey, with a second dark tattoo partly visible at the right edge of the frame.

The galley lamp swings on its chain each time the bow lifts, so you have learned to judge the pans by their rattle rather than by sight. Dougie has been down twice already asking if the tea is ready, as though the North Sea might hurry itself for him. You scrape potato peel into the bucket with one eye on the porthole, where the moon hangs over the black water, a thin paring with a face pressed into its curve.

Your grandmother said that face belonged to the moon's sister, who had married the tide and never got over it. Every night she sat at the edge of the sky with her chin in her hand, and when a boat failed to come home she let one bead of silver run down her cheek. Old Tam, who skippered the Marigold until his knees gave out, swore he had seen the drip in the spray off the bow. You never believed him, and you never stopped looking.
Halfway through the second pot the boat rolls hard and the porthole fills with a sheet of foam that turns the moon into a smear. Your heart does something stupid. Then the foam drains away and there she is again, face intact, a cluster of little clouds drifting beside her like a stray flock, the sparkle star pricking out just above. Nobody has gone over the side. The kettle is singing.
You pour the tea into four mugs, then a fifth, which you set on the sill for nobody, and watch the steam curl up toward the glass until the moon is only a blur of breath and light. Dougie will drink his in the wheelhouse and call it the best brew of the trip. You will let him. Out there the sea keeps its own counsel, and the moon keeps her tears to herself.
