Morse-style dots and tiny words on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a pale forearm with a row of small black marks running across it, made up of single dots, short dashes and tiny words in very small lettering. The linework is fine and crisp, with the marks sitting evenly spaced in a single horizontal line against the skin. The ink is black on a light background, and a dark curved outline from another object sits at the right edge of the frame.

The relay on Harrow Shelf has been silent for eleven years, so when the old key starts chattering at four in the morning you assume it is the cold. Metal contracts. Contacts stick. You pull the stool closer anyway and sit with your tea going grey, listening to the dits and dahs crawl through the static like something dragging itself up a stair.

The pattern repeats. Three short, then a long gap, then a word spelled out letter by letter in the old prosign style, then a single dot, as if someone is tapping the desk to be sure you are awake. You know the sequence. Everyone on the shelf learned it from the same battered manual, the one with the water stain shaped like Ireland. Nobody has sent it in your lifetime. It is the call for a crew that was mothballed when the ice moved north, and you had always assumed those men were long dead, or long since gone south with the rest.
You write the letters on the back of a ration card. They come out as a dozen words, none of them a name you recognise, and then, last of all, a plain signal: the one that means send the rest in the clear, I am ready to listen. So you lift your hand from the tea, set two fingers on the key, and press once, twice, a slow answering dit. The room goes still around you, and far off in the dark the other end begins again.
