Two fine line arrows on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arrows run parallel across the inner forearm, each with a diamond-shaped head and feathered tail. The linework is thin and even, with small geometric details such as a diamond bead on the shaft of the lower arrow and shaded fletching. The design is rendered in black ink on pale skin against a plain white background.

Tom had until the bells to finish the pair, and the glue on the second set of feathers was still tacky when the gas jet hissed and dimmed. He sat on an upturned crate at the back of the shop on Castle Street, turning the arrows in the lamplight. Both had diamond-cut heads he had filed himself and bound in waxed linen. Mrs Pryce had been clear about the order. Her daughters had not spoken since their father's funeral, and she wanted them shooting at the Wednesday meet, not sulking at opposite ends of the field.

"Point them apart," she had said, so he had. The first arrow ran left, its fletching cut from grey goose and its head turned towards the window. The second ran right, its feathers barred with dark brown, and at its centre he had set a small diamond bead of horn. Nobody had asked for that. It was the one thing he had made from his own idea, because it reminded him of the sweet-shop token the two girls had split between them when they were small enough to share a pocket.
At dawn the sisters came up the lane in their boots, each one stopping short when she saw which way her arrow pointed. Eliza laughed first, a sharp sound in the cold, and Ruth pretended not to notice. Neither would take the bow that was offered. They stood on the wet grass between the butts for a long while, until the frost began to melt off the hay.
When the bell rang, the arrows were already in the air, one flying west and one flying east, and the groundsman swore he had never seen two shafts land so neatly in the same bale, their heads touching under the straw.
