Old Harriet kept the rows at Tallow Green, and every spring she pegged out the garden the way her mother had taught her, with string run between four stakes. She laid the cross on the earth and set a seed every hand's width along each line, and at the ends she planted the small starflowers the bees liked best. The villagers said she was mad to plant by the sky when the sky was not hers to plant by.

One March the frost came in the night and killed every seedling on the eastern line. Harriet knelt in the wet and counted what was left. The dark bed at the centre had gone to black mush, and the two crescent beds of white lilies either side of it were blackened to the root. She sat back on her heels and said nothing for a long while. Then her grandson Tom, who was nine and had no patience, asked why she did not just buy seed from the market like everyone else.

She told him the moon had come down into the garden once, and it was so tired from the long walk that it asked for a bed to lie in. She had given it a crescent of soil, and it had stayed there ever since. Tom said that was nonsense. She agreed it was. But she dug the dead lilies out and replanted them the next morning, and the crescents came up white again by May, and she never did explain why the middle bed always flowered first.
