A close photograph of a person's inner forearm, with a vertical line of five small black dots near the wrist. The dots are evenly spaced and sharply defined against pale skin. Dear Ida,

The wire ran out past the last water tower at Kessell Flat, and for three nights now I have sent the same five taps down it to nobody. Five short, even taps, which is the signal for a five on the old key. Mr Hobday at the depot says I am wasting current. He may be right, but the line still hums when I press the key, a faint buzz from the far relay that tells me someone at the other end is awake.

You will want the beginning, so here it is. In March the rain came over the Scarp in one afternoon and took the poles at the river crossing. Since then the line has been carried along the road on tripods of mesquite and iron, and I am the only man between Kessell and the coast who can read it. To keep my hands busy I count the insulators as I walk the route. Five on the north pole, five on the south, five on the pole with the crooked cross-arm where the lizards gather in the afternoon heat.

On the fourth night the buzz changed. Five dots came back to me, slow and deliberate, and then a single long dash, the way you used to finish your letters to me when we were children and had only one pencil between us.

I have tapped five in reply. Tomorrow I will try the dash, and if the wire holds I will send you the rest of the alphabet one letter at a time until the road runs out.
