Hands with knuckle tattoos and a wristwatch
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown in a dramatic black and white studio portrait, one resting over the other's wrist, with a wristwatch on the upper wrist. Small dark tattoos sit on the knuckles and fingers, including a cross and simple geometric marks, and a larger design with fine detail is visible across the back of the lower hand. The image is lit against a solid black background, which isolates the hands and emphasises their texture and shading.

She looked at the wristwatch he'd bought in Hull, the one he kept winding although nothing in his life seemed to need timing anymore, and she poured him tea without sugar because he'd stopped taking it the winter his brother went under.

He had a small square mark on the knuckle of his forefinger, a thing he'd drawn himself with a sewing needle and ink from a biro, and she knew what it meant without him saying. Four lines and a cross: a debt paid in full, or so the men at the Anchor liked to say. Nobody believed it. The harbour had a long memory for promises made in lamplight.
He set the kettle down and told her the boat was gone, the one with the blue hull and the name nobody would speak aloud. Dorota turned the tap off and waited. Outside, the gulls were quarrelling over a split crate of mackerel, and the tide was turning, and for the first time in years the water sounded like it was going somewhere else. She reached under the counter for the ledger, opened it to the page with the crossed-out names, and drew one clean line through the last of them.
