Leafy sprigs and script on fingers
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand resting over fabric, showing a sprig of shaded leaves running along the middle finger and a smaller sprig on the adjacent finger. A small script word sits between them on the ring finger. The leaves are built from stippled and soft shaded fills, and the composition is close and centred on the hand.

The rowan by the back gate had dropped half its leaves before Miss Pell agreed to come down to breakfast, and I took that as a sign she had settled in. She sat by the window of number four with a drawing board on her knees and a steel nib she dipped so often the tip went brown. Every morning she stippled leaves, thousands of tiny dots, until each one looked faintly breathed on.

Sea fog came in the third week of October and stayed four days. The boarders grumbled about the damp, and the bread went soft in its tin. Miss Pell did not grumble. When I asked what she was making, she said it was a sprig for a man in Leeds who wanted his mother's garden on his skin, and then she tapped the sheet beneath it and said the word she had written there was wild, because nobody had pulled back the brambles at Hollin Farm in years, and that was the whole point of the thing.
On the fifth morning the fog lifted and the sea came up blue under the pier. Her trunk was gone from the landing and the room was stripped to bare ticking. She had left one drawing on the table, the rowan so small I needed my spectacles, with the word looping beneath it in brown ink. I pinned it inside the register and forgot about it until the wind came off the water that evening. Out at the gate I found the rowan had shed its last leaves in the night, scattered on the path, each one darker on the side that had faced the sea.
