Black and grey moth inside a fine line geometric diamond tattoo on the upper thigh.

Moth in a geometric diamond on thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A moth with spread wings sits inside a wireframe diamond shape formed by intersecting straight lines. The moth is rendered with fine linework and soft stippled shading in black ink, while the geometric outline is drawn in thin, crisp lines. The tattoo is centred on a pale thigh against a plain light grey background, with a dark garment and a hand wearing a ring at the top of the frame.

Your name badge still carries the old school crest, a shield the colour of weak tea, and nobody at the reunion looks twice at you until you stop beneath the wire model hanging in the corner of what used to be Mr Cardew's maths room. It now hangs from the ceiling of a bar, a tangle of silver lines forming an upright diamond, with a tealight set inside its lowest point. Dilys Okafor spots you from the crisps table and waves a paper plate.

'He never let anyone touch that,' she says, nodding at the frame. 'Remember? Fourth year, Jamie Pryce had it down off the hook and we all got a telling off.' You remember. You remember the moth too, pinned inside the diamond with its wings spread wide enough to brush the edges, dusty and perfectly still. Cardew told you the lines were there to hold a thing in place so you could study it from every side, and that a creature which strays into straight edges spends its whole life looking for corners that are not there.

You walk over with your drink, close enough to see the stippled shading on the wings and the faint pencil guidelines beneath the ink, and that is when you understand what you were never meant to see. The moth was never caught. Cardew drew it himself, onto card, and built the wires around it so the eye would read a cage where there was only a frame. Dilys is still talking about Pryce's detention. You let her. Somewhere behind the bar a glass rings, the candle inside the diamond gutters, and the moth, as it always was, goes on not leaving.
