Faceted heart on an inner forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single heart is drawn as a faceted, gem-like outline, with thin straight lines crossing its interior to suggest planes and angles. The linework is consistent black ink with a slightly heavier outer contour and finer internal strokes. The heart is centred on a pale, softly lit arm against a plain light background.

The survey stake had gone again, so Maud Pell walked the grader track at first light with the chalk line over one shoulder and the sun not yet clear of the ridge. Out past the cattle grid the flats were the colour of weak tea. Every fence post she passed carried a rag of red ribbon, tied by someone who had also lost their way out here and wanted the next person to know it.

Her father had cut glass for a living before the Sheffield works closed. He taught her that a stone will not throw light until someone has made it bear its planes, and that the work starts at the point, with a straight edge and a steady hand. Maud counted angles under her breath the way other people hummed. Out here, angles were the only thing that never lied about where you were.

At noon she found the stake lying in a dry gully, hammered back in by a stranger who had set it dead true, and beside it a biscuit tin wedged under a stone. Inside lay a folded sheet of tracing paper. Someone had drawn a heart, faceted like a cut stone, each internal line numbered with a bearing in pencil. It was her father's hand. The lines were his, and the bearings were the road she stood on.

She followed the top line east until it met the grader ruts, then the second line north, counting paces at each plane. The last bearing ended at a bare rock no taller than a knee. Scratched into its face was a small square mark, the same one he had pressed into every blank he ever sold her. She knelt and brushed the grit away with her sleeve, and the sun came through a gap in the ridge and broke across the stone in a clean white spark.
