Moth inside a geometric diamond on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small black and grey tattoo of a moth sits inside an outlined diamond shape, with the wings shaded using stippled dots and fine lines. The diamond's edges and internal facets are drawn in thin, even linework, and the design is set against smooth skin in a plain, light background. A hand with a silver ring rests at the top of the frame, and the photo is clear and evenly lit.

The lamp on the Wendle has a diamond of glass set in its brass cage, and by the second night out of Brentford the moth has found it. You notice it before your father does, a grey shape pressed flat against the pane as if it wants the flame and has been told it cannot have it. He is at the tiller with his pipe unlit, counting bridges under his breath, and he says nothing about the lamp, which is how you know he has been watching it too.

Thirty-one years on the river and he has never once cleaned that glass. Your mother used to say the soot was the only thing aboard that kept its promises. You take the cloth from its hook anyway and climb onto the cabin roof, the water sliding black beneath the keel, the towpath lamps of Kew going past one by one like coins dropped into a well.
The moth does not fly when you open the cage. It stays on the glass with its wings spread to the light, the dark veins of them dotted like frost on a windowpane. You understand, cloth in fist, that it is not trapped at all. It has chosen the one place where the diamond bends the flame into a point, and it will not be moved by a clumsy hand.
So you wait. Your father comes up the companionway, looks, and sets his pipe down on the rail. 'Leave it,' he says. 'It knows the way out better than we do.' You lower the cloth. The moth lifts at last, crosses the dark water toward the Chiswick light, and behind the glass the flame burns clean and steady while the Wendle goes on towards the sea.
