Sailing ships and sunrise across both legs
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers both legs from the thighs to the calves, showing two sailing ships on rough seas beneath a sunburst and layered clouds. The linework is fine and horizontal, with bands of parallel lines suggesting sky and water in a woodcut or engraved style. The design is rendered only in black ink on pale skin, with the negative space forming the light areas, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the legs.

By the time the lamps go out along the quay at Saltmarrow, you have already rowed out to the two ships riding in the roads, and the sun is still a rumour somewhere behind Carrick Head. Your father swore the Marian Gale and the Hester Lowe would never be fitted out in the same harbour, not since the quarrel over the Baltic freight, yet there they sit, one with her topsails loosed and the other with new tar still shining on her rigging. Nobody asked you to come. You came anyway, with a biscuit in your coat and the engraver's proof folded in your pocket.

Miss Ada Pryce, who keeps the Hester's books and has no patience for boys, tells you the glass is falling. You do not believe her until the sky turns. The clouds pile over the mainmast in long wet bands, and the light breaks through them in thin cut lines, the way the engraver at Fenner's print shop leaves the white parts of a block by taking everything else away. The sea goes grey and combed into rows, rising to meet the hulls like the ridges of a ploughed field.
The storm takes the Hester on the bar at midnight. You are in the skiff before anyone shouts, pulling against the tide with a coil of line across your knees, and you do not remember the crossing afterwards, only the weight of the rope and Ada's voice calling your name from the rail. By dawn the sea has given back one ship and one boy, both soaked and both still afloat.
When the proof comes back from Fenner's, you pin it above your bed. The black lines are the water and the sky, and the white is where the sun got through. You count the masts twice, as your father taught you, and find the same number both times.
