Mountain lake scene with red sun on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a red sun rising behind a range of mountains, with a lake, pine trees and a small cottage on the right. Bold black outlines define the scene, and dotwork stippling shades the hills, shoreline and cottage roof. Two red five-petal flowers and dark leaves sit at the base, beneath an arch of black and white star-like motifs with red dots.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorrit had been rowing the ferry across Tarn Mell for thirty-one years, and in all that time the sun had never once come up where the postcards said it would. It rose behind the Gaskell ridge, a hard red coin that the mist took its time giving up, and by the time it cleared the peaks the cottage roof had already caught the light and the lake had turned to pewter. She kept a tin of boot polish on the thwart and a flask of tea wedged under the seat.

Her brother Tom had built the cottage the year before he drowned, though nobody in the village would say drowned. They said he went out early. Dorrit went out at six every morning, while the shoreline was still striped with the shadows of the pines, and she rowed the empty crossing so the boat would not forget its way. With no passengers the boat sat light, and the lake seemed to lean closer.

One October a surveyor from the council stepped onto the landing with a clipboard and a rolled plan of the valley. He wanted to know why the cottage had no road to it. Dorrit pointed across the water to the two red flowers Tom had planted either side of the path and said the road was the lake, and the lake had never once asked for a permit.

He laughed, then didn't, because she was already pushing off. When she looked back he was still standing on the stones, watching the sun climb above the peaks, and she thought he might be counting the lines of the water the way Tom used to, as if the lake were something you could measure and be done with. She let the oars drip and let him count.
