Cabin scene with pines and flower on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a log cabin with a smoking chimney, framed by pine trees and a large orange sun, with grass, a tree stump and rocks on the ground. A red flower and leaves sit at the base of the design. Bold black outlines and grey shading give depth, while red, orange, yellow and teal fill the cabin, sun, trees and foliage.

Grandad never explained the sun. It sat over the tops of the pines each evening with its eyes screwed shut, like a man pretending not to hear the kettle, and he said it had done that since the summer his wife planted the red flowers by the step. I was twelve the first time he let me light the fire. He stacked the kindling himself, split from the old ash stump out back, and told me the smoke was for the sun, so it would know the day was finished and could rest.

When he died the cabin came to me with a leaking roof, a shelf of seed catalogues and a debt to the village shop I had to pay off in pennies. I moved in the autumn I turned fifty-one, and for three weeks I forgot the fire. The sun rose grey and sour over the rocks by the path, and the grass by the door went flat and tired. Mrs Dacre from the next holding walked up the track one morning with a loaf under her arm and said I looked like a woman who'd let the stove go out on purpose.
So I split the ash wood, coaxed the chimney into drawing, and sat on the step with a mug while the smoke curled up grey and then white against the trees. The sun slid down behind the pines, orange as a cough drop, and closed its eyes. I don't know if it heard me. I told it out loud that I was staying.
Now I light the fire before the kettle, every night, and the sun goes down on time.
