Cabin, mountains and roses in a sunset arch
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cabin sits in a grassy foreground beneath a large red sun with orange rays, with snowcapped mountains and rolling clouds behind it. Red roses fill the lower and side edges of a dotted-line arch, and the piece is outlined in bold black. Solid colour fills and heavy black shading make up the design, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Sit down, all of you, and mind the trestle, it has opinions. I knew Ada Pruett when she was the girl who bit her brother for stealing her bootlaces, and I am telling you now she went up the Scarrow Pass in a borrowed frock the spring she turned twenty, with a rucksack of cuttings from her gran's rose bed strapped to her back, because Tom Hollis had built a cabin at the top of the valley and said he would not come down until she agreed to marry him.

She got there on the evening of the wedding, which was the trouble. The sun was going down red behind the ridge, the way it does when the air has been dusty all day, and the rays shot out orange over the snow on the peaks like someone had cracked an egg across the sky. Tom was at the door with a lantern in his hand. He had not cut his hair, he had not eaten, and he said it was the longest walk he had ever watched anybody make.
Now here is the part my own mother told me, and she never once lied at a wedding. Ada planted every cutting she had carried up that hill, one at the foot of each porch post, and by morning they had sent red up the boards like a flag. Tom lit a lamp in the front window and left it burning, because he said the lamp was for her brother, who had promised to walk up after supper and had not yet arrived.
The brother came over the pass at dawn, soaked to the knees and swearing, and he saw that lamp from the bend in the track and knew exactly where to go.
