Log cabin, wolf and red moon on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A traditional-style tattoo shows a log cabin with a grey-roofed chimney and smoke rising into a cloud, set against a red moon with small birds in the sky. A grey wolf howls at the left edge, with pine trees to the right and a large orange flower with leaves at the base. Bold black outlines frame the solid flat fills of red, orange, brown, grey and teal on pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf started up again just after the supper dishes, and Mrs Pruitt put down her cup and told you to leave the lamp alone. You didn't. You stood at the back window of the feed store, where the town stopped and the pines began, and watched the red moon push up over Halvorsen's ridge as if someone had paid it to.

Your father had built the cabin on the far side of the creek the summer before the war, log by log, and it was the only house in Calder Falls with its chimney smoking in July. Nobody went out there. The Halvorsen boy said the wolf had been raised by the old trapper's dog and would come to your hand if you sang. You didn't believe him, but you took the long way home anyway, past the marsh marigolds that grew thick and orange by the water.

On the Thursday you went out with a sack of flour and a note from the church women for Mrs Akerholt, who lived alone out there and had not been to service in years. The door was painted red. Inside, the stove was going and a grey shape lay by the hearth, not a wolf at all, only an old dog with a sad face. Mrs Akerholt was out back feeding the hens.

She took the flour without looking at it and said you had your father's way of standing in doorways. Then she tapped the note against her palm and told you the church women could come out themselves if they wanted her soup. You walked home under the moon with nothing to carry, and when you looked back, her smoke had folded itself into the clouds, and somewhere behind the pines the wolf was howling at a sky that had no need of an answer.
