Camping scene in rope frame on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo on the forearm shows a campfire with a hanging pot, a tent beside a river, mountains, pine trees, a crescent moon and small stars, all inside a rope-edged oval. Yellow flowers sit at the sides and base of the oval. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with green and brown tones in the landscape and grey shading in the sky.

Ada found the tin under the third bench just after the last train to Glenmorrow had pulled out, its lid dented at one corner and a campfire painted on it in enamel gone soft at the edges. Inside were a folded Ordnance Survey sheet, a box of matches wrapped in greaseproof paper, two pressed yellow flowers and a little brass hook that might once have hung a pot over a fire. She turned the tin over twice in the cold light of the waiting room, then put her coat back on and walked it across the platform to the signal box.

Walter Crane had worked that box for thirty-one years and knew every walker who had ever been dropped off at the halt with a rucksack too big for them. He held the tin up to the lamp and smiled as if it were an old friend. "The tent by the river," he said. "Those were the Pryce lads, the summer before the big storm. They pitched on the flat below the pines every August and stayed till the fire went out."
"Do you know where they are now?"
"Scattered like everyone." He tapped the lid where the moon was painted, a thin white crescent above the ridge. "That's the night they came up to me for lamp oil and said they could see the mountains from the water. Clear as a pane of glass, they said."
Ada carried the tin back across the platform in both hands. The peaks on the lid were blue-grey and the stars were sharp little crosses in the sky. She set it on the sill of the waiting room, facing the hills, and left the matches where anyone could find them.
